14 months after death: Remains of ex- Senate President unburied

14 months after death: Remains of ex- Senate President unburied

BY DAHIRU SULEIMAN.

THE remains of the late Senate President in the Second Republic between 1979 and 1983, Senator Joseph Wayas, have yet to be buried 14 months after death.

Investigations has revealed that Wayas died in December 2021. Following the demise, the Cross River State Governor, Prof Ben Ayade, inaugurated a funeral committee immediately to plan for his burial.

The committee was chaired by a two-time Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Kanu Agabi.

However, after over a year, the late Wayas has yet to be laid to rest as family sources said there was no finance to attend to the body and that they could barely cope.

A former executive secretary of the National Planning Commission, Ntufam Ugbo, revealed he was no longer part of the committee.

While affirming Ayade had made funds available for the funeral, he disclosed the first son of the late Senate President, Joseph Wayas Jr, had a better explanation for the delay.

He said, “He cannot say he does not have an explanation to give on why the funeral is delayed. He is the first son, so he should be in charge.

Earlier, Ayade, in a condolence message lamented the passing of the former Senate President, describing his death as a monumental loss to the state in particular and Nigeria as a whole.

In a press statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Christian Ita, Ayade said Dr Wayas left indelible footprints on the sands of time.

“As a state, Cross River is in pain as we mourn the passing of our illustrious son. He was a rare gem. Dr Wayas’ demise is indeed a monumental loss to our dear state and Nigeria,” Ayade said in the statement.

Also, the Chief Media Adviser to Cross River governor, Christian Ita, disclosed that the governor had released funds for the burial.

“I don’t want to get involved in the matter. Perhaps, the first son is the problem, but speak to members of the funeral committee. The governor actually released money for the burial months ago,” said.

However, in response, Wayas Jr blamed the funeral committee for the delay of his late dad’s burial.

He said he had little role to play since the committee was set to plan for the funeral.

“The funeral is not exactly in our hands but that of the funeral committee. I hear there are issues surrounding the funeral funds. And some members are said to have resigned. I cannot go back to the state governor or Federal Government now due to election issues. The governor has done well already,” he said.

El-Rufai Attack on Senator Makarfi,Cheap Blackmail

Makarfi Ambassadors have replied the Kaduna State Governor, Mal. Nasir El-Rufai over an audio trending on social media, where he alleged that the money  former  Senator Ahmed  Makarfi got in his second term in office as Governor of the State is far more than what his administration got in eight years.

According to the group, El-Rufai’s statement about Senator Makarfi’s administration is nothing, but a clear evidence of either someone out of mind or face saving device to cover up for the  mismanagement of loans collected from world bank and commercial banks .

The group further said ,”It is grossly insensitive and out of common sense for an incumbent Governor to come out openly to say a  Governor with verifiable records of performance, such as Senator Makarfi didn’t do anything tangible that could be traced to his administration, when in same audio he contradicted him saying he built roads, school and other infrastructures, but he borrowed loan .

“In the audio widely circulated by mischief makers Senator Makarfi’s hard earned reputation as a Governor, El-Rufai asked why Senator Makarfi borrowed loan with amount of money available to his government and did nothing with it ,but he (El-Rufai)collected loan, but worked with it and the works are there for everyone to see.

Reacting to what Makarfi Ambassadors described as “unfortunate and cheap”  blackmail, the group said, Governor Nasir El-Rufai required a medical attention to check his state of mind, the group in a statement jointly signed by Mr. Abdullahi Ahmed, Coordinator General-Matters, and Engr Bolade Aina, Coordinator Planning/Strategy,”Governor El-Rufai does not not the have moral right to question the loan collected by the Makarfi administration , because eyes are not blind to the highly quality and visible dividends of democracy .

It however, challenged Governor El-Rufai to make Public the amount of  foreign and domestic loan collected by his government and how they spent; the money accrued from sales of government houses and pension and gratuities of sacked civil servants.

The statement further reads:”We can’t see or understand the correlation between Makarfi led government that came into office in 1999 and left 2907 and that of El-Rufai, who took over office in 2015 after Makarfi’s three successors namely: Former Governor Namadi Sambo; Late Governor Patrick Yakowa and Former Governor Ramalan Yero.

“This blame game from an incumbent Governor of a State  is undoubtedly a sign of weakness; failure and fear of being sent to jail for mismanaging public funds after leaving office .

“El-Rufai is apparently jittery about imminent election defeat and so,resort to character assassination of perceived enemies, who he viewed as working against his anointed governorship Candidate .

“Let’s us categorically state  here that Kaduna citizens can’t be fooled again with his political antics of divide and rule system to win election. Come March 18, the Kaduna people will speak in loud voice again as they did during the presidential elections and send him and cronies out of sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House.

“We are proud to be associated with Senator  Makarfi  any day as he remains the best Governor, who judiciously used  the available resources to develop Kaduna State and better lots of the people.”

“We urged our fellow respectful citizens to remain firm and law abiding as we are close to the victory in days to come, because, seeing is peculiar feeling of knowing. Thus, we also appreciate the support so far, garnered from various Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), as we are in deep talk with Labour Party’s Support Groups on assurance of their collapse for ‘PDP’ – before the election day.

“Also, we are calling on the security agencies and the electoral empire (INEC) to discharge their responsibilities with fairness, justice, and transparency.”
